I'm back online! w00t! Evidently, the source of the problem was settings on a house guest's laptop. I couldn't fix the problem the last time I talked to tech support because the offending laptop wasn't here. But today it was, and the problem is solved. When Firefox jubilantly started google after days of failed page loads, I said, THANK YOU to the man on the phone. To which he replied "you DID it! You followed all of my instructions and now it's working!" How great is that?
More later.

Yay! I'm happy to see you back around here!
Hahaha! Look forward to new posts from you!
Yay!!!
I'm happy to be back too. I got a wee bit depressed over the weekend, and I think it was partly because I missed my bloggy friends. Also, of course, because my dissertation is a giant monster glaring over my shoulder. The usual.
yay!
Good luck with the monster.
Welcome back!
Welcome back!
Hey, welcome back! I'm so dependent on my internet I honestly don't know what people did before it existed!
Woo hoo!
Is this a wireless network deal, or did your guest plug the cable into their laptop? Either way, weird... (I have noticed that the iPhone slows down the wireless connection in the rest of the house. I do not understand how this works since multiple laptops run quite happily).
It was a wireless problem. Something with the security settings on her machine blocked the connection for me. I'm not sure I understand it, nor could I fix the same problem in the future. Oh well.
