I don't know why I haven't been blogging lately.  I'm going to list a few potential topics to maybe help me get back in the swing of things.

  • EGM and I decided to get married, and together we picked out the most awesomely awesome engagement ring.
  • I think I have finally experienced sexism at work first-hand.  I'm going to keep an eye on things before I decide if the situation represented something systematic or if it was merely coincidental.
  • It has been a very nice spring, and I am just itching to get my garden started.
  • Crafting emails that convey the tone I intend is apparently difficult for me.
  • After being adamant that I'm not going to attend my commencement ceremony, I'm starting to think it might be a nice thing to do.
So hopefully I will find the motivation to expound on these topics very soon!

Congratulations!!! We'll have to have a virtual wedding shower for you when the time comes!

As for the sexism, I of course don't know the situation, but a lot of times when it's your first real encounter with sexism you're so shocked that you're trying to rationalize it away. Surely this place I work at is a safe place! It can't be sexism! But no, there is no place free from sexism, even your own head. But, that doesn't mean all is lost, it just means you need to keep thinking and be aware! :)

Fun times with the wedding, Congrats!!

The second point sounds bad, I hope it can be resolved.

Hope you get to enjoy a springy weekend. It's really warm where I am now :) and flowers in the garden!!

I'm curious to hear more about how you decided to get married, and your feelings on the need for engagement rings (especially the need for them to be awesome).

Sorry about the sexism. I agree with Rebecca. It's probably not a coincidence, although it may not have been intentional. That doesn't make it any less sexist, just means it's unconscious bias (which is still systematic, unfortunately).

Email tone is tricky, but there are many articles (on the intertubes!) that provide guidelines you'll probably find helpful. And practice makes perfect. Just remember, you're different in writing than you are on the phone. It's a letter, not a conversation, no matter how much you'd like it to be a two-way street, your words have to stand on their own without you there to explain what you meant. But your blog is always carefully worded, so I know you can learn this skill quickly and use it with confidence!

Commencement can be an important time to meditate on how far you've come. Celebrate the milestones! It's a good habit to get into - most of us don't reward ourselves enough when things work out, we just beat ourselves up when things go wrong.

Or, you know, our commenters remind us that we're just being paranoid feminists. Whatever. ;-)

If your wedding is only half as good as ours, you will have the best day ever!

Hope to hear from you soon on everything, even only on the spring and garden!

If your department or secondary institute does a small commencement ceremony I would suggest going. I didn't do the big university wide one but some kind of acknowledgment/celebration seemed necessary.
