Ecogeoman and I were just remarking that when we fall asleep someplace other than the bed (e.g. couch, car), we inevitably wake up at some point drenched in sweat. In contrast, I never wake up a sweaty mess when I sleep in bed, where I typically sleep through the night without interruption.
Why is that?

For me, when I fall asleep on the couch or in the car, it is because I am really, really tired. Usually because I'm sick. So I think that's why I usually wake up gross.
That is so true!
At least in our case, when we're napping on the sofa we're much more cuddly than we are in bed, where we both like our own space. Plus the cats tend to jump on us. So that's probably a large part of the reason for us.
Also: do you tend to sleep in bed only at night, and elsewhere only during the day? Because I think your body temperature drops at night, right?
I feel like they might have addressed this general concept somehow in the Sleep episode of RadioLab. I don't always wake up sweaty from naps in odd places, but sometimes do wake up very sweaty at night. I wonder what causes that. I wonder if it has something to do with anxiety about sleeping someplace different or being stressed.
I fall asleep on the couch pretty frequently and always just at night when I'm tired and should go to bed instead. I rarely wake up sweaty in bed at night. Then again, it might happen in bed but I don't wake up enough to remember it because unlike the living room, the bedroom is dark, quiet, etc.
Interesting that it's a common experience!
