At my lab, we like to talk about Lost the day after it airs. It used to be a string of individual conversations that seemed to go on all day. I'd talk to the first guy who got in, then later Awesome Technician and I would talk about it, then maybe later Research Advisor would want to chew on it with us too, then I'd see the other technician chatting with AT, and on it went. Now we take turns bringing donuts. No one is allowed to talk about last night's show until we're all together and then we hash out our theories and questions over some Boston cream.
I really like that we do this. Sure, it's 30 min of wasted time, but I think it's good for us. It's nice to have a little fun at work, as long as it doesn't get out of hand. On top of that, it often devolves into work talk.
I'd like to note that people in the lab who don't watch Lost are welcome to join us for donuts if they don't mind listening to us hypothesize about hatches and smoke monsters.

- I am a 6th year PhD student in the earth/life sciences. While I love science as a vocation and intellectual pursuit, I get frustrated with what it means to have a job as a scientist, especially as a woman. I am freaked out by my impending two-body problem and being a scientist with children someday. I am an advocate of lowering what we expect one person to do together with really working while at work so that 40-45 hours of it is sufficient. Enough is as good as a feast!

Even though there might be donuts I just get more and more happy with my decision of not owning a TV!
Ha! That sounds like fun. Our lab used to do that with Friends and ER.
Hatches and smoke monsters? That's some show.
We all tend to go out to lunch about once every two weeks. It wastes some time, but we enjoy it and it's good for morale :-)
Coffee breaks indicate that few people in my department spend their spare time on the same things, so I doubt we could find such a non-work unifying theme... but definitely we could do with such an informal team building" activity.
oh, i LOVE that! Lost is my favorite show, i wish i had that at my work. i cannot wait for season 5, but what is this crap about making us wait until January or February again?!
