Thought of the day

A micromanager is benign if he always tells you to do things the way you would do them anyway.

[Caveat: I fucking HATE being micromanaged].

I'm not sure this is true, or at least, not for me. If a micromanager is constantly telling me stuff that I disagree with, it would at least be more interesting than constant seething resentment at being told things that I ALREADY KNOW. Differences in approach would make me reconsider my own methods and might actually teach me something...

Hmm, a rare scenario?

Cath, I certainly see your point. It probably depends on the combination of personalities involved. With a micromanager I sometimes encountered, it was pretty easy to just be like, 'yep, okay, I'll do it that way' since it didn't change anything for me. I'm sure I would feel differently if I perceived the person to be very bossy or snide.

One of the reasons that being micromanaged is annoying is that you're always spending extra time explaining almost everything you do in great detail because the micromanager can't stand to not be doing everything himself (so far no herselfs). They don't always have time to actually tell you what to do, although I've had that scenario, also, and it is more pleasant if you and they do things the same way, but being told things constantly and being asked things constantly actually interrupts work and sometimes just creates more than is needed.

My biggest micromanager was female.

I technically work for the biggest micromanager anyone I know has come in contact with and it's a woman.

She is the biggest reason I'll be applying for academic jobs in the fall.
