Yesterday's poll precipitated such great comments that I decided to delve a little deeper into what motivates people to work so damn much. Obviously it's not just because of the threat of being scooped. So, a new poll. This time I made it in Survey Monkey because the one from yesterday got all jacked up and I can't see the results. Survey Monkey is much easier and more flexible, however, so I wrote four questions - one that's general and three that are targeted by job description. Sorry that you have to click to another page. Please come back here to make comments, especially if you think I provided sucky responses.

Hmm, no category for post-docs or staff scientists. Or anyone who isn't planning a TT career...
Damn, ScienceMama, you're right! Post docs totally overlooked again. I made the survey on the fly without really planning it out. Actually, I was just going to have the first question but got on a roll with the others. I guess the questions for a post-doc would be a blend of the student and non-tenured categories: to please your boss, to please your colleagues, to get a job, or just for the simple love of science. Although it was totally my bad that I left you out, I'm not going to redo the survey. Feel free to chide me.
The non-TT career was meant to be included in the last group as the "non-tenure track real job people".
I tried to take the survey, but I just don't know if I apply. I don't usually work more than ~40 hour weeks. Many 45 hours, but I wouldn't call that an excessive amount of work that needs to be motivated by something specific. Just wanted to let you know that you have an outlier here. :)
