While we're on the subject of fitting in, did you feel a little like this when you first discovered your science? When you first learned people actually devoted their lives to studying the thing that had long fascinated you but that you may not have even known had a name?
I really like this video and the song happens to be my all time favorite.

Did you see my Halloween costume on Facebook? I didn't have any good blog-able pics but you should check them out over there!
OMG! I just saw it! You looked amazing. What a spectacular costume. Sewing skills give you such opportunity at Halloween (I'm assuming you sewed it) -- I wish I could sew.
I also meant to ask you, was the dress in your defense photo post the red dress you blogged about a while back?
Oh. my. goodness. I can totally relate to the pursuit of bee-people!
I'm glad you posted this. I had forgotten all about this song. It would be nice to tell a reviewer some time," you don't like my point of view and I'm insane!"
I think this would have been a nice song to listen to while writing my dissertation.
I love this video. But I do not know who sings it - sorry for my ignorance - but could you enlighten me?
glad you all enjoyed it, too. :)
loskova, the band is Blind Melon. This song was kind of considered a "one hit wonder" -- they didn't have any other popular songs. I think they only made one other album because the lead singer died very young. sad.
I did sew it- I was a crazy woman for 2 days doing it! So fun though!
The red dress is THE red dress I blogged about. I still loooove it =)
EGC thanks! I will look them up :)
Awesome analogy!
Out of an intake of 180 students in my year at high school, I ended up being 1 of 7 taking biology in the final 2 years (when we chose 3 subjects to study exclusively), 1 of 5 taking chemistry, 1 of only 2 to take both, and the only girl in my maths class... saying I wanted to do genetics at university met with bafflement and derision.
But I had an awesome biology teacher who was very encouraging, and she set up a work shadowing placement for me at our local university's biochemistry department. I spent 2 days there and realised that I could do this for a living!
The best thing for me was meeting my new classmates at university for the first time, and realising that I wasn't a freaky bee girl. I could even say "I think I'd like to go into research" and have people say "me too!"
I have a big smile on my face now! Thanks!
More than three years on, I am still linking to this post and it still makes me smile :D
