My city made a pretty big deal about Earth Hour, saying the whole place would be dark and it would make such a
statement and as bonus we'd get to see the stars for once. I was driving home at the time and didn't notice a big difference. A few buildings were darker than usual but still had plenty of nonessential lights burning. Ironically, one of those electronic, back-lit billboards was advertising Earth Hour in bright lights -- during Earth Hour.

OH darn! I forgot about Earth Hour. I remembered in the morning but with my mom and sister visiting it slipped my mind. I think from 8-9 we were just getting back from dinner. My husband, sister and I watched a movie-in the dark, but my mom was reading and she likes lots and lots of lights.
Mr E Man was driving then too, and saw someone driving with no lights on. He reckons she didn't quite understand the concept.
I didn't even know about it until just minutes before.
We were at a party and a huge argument ensued about how much sacrifice constituted our recognition of the event.
We ended up lighting candles, but that was about it.
The lights seemed too bright when they were turned back on promptly when the hour ended.
If it were up to me, I would have left them off!
I know that I should be super supportive and on board about Earth Hour, but I kind of thought it was one of those things that is so utterly symbolic but not very substantive. I know a lot of people think it's a really cool thing, and I think it WOULD be totally cool if your whole city truly participated and you COULD see all the stars, but I just feel like that's never going to happen. You're never really going to get enough people on board.
And after Earth Hour ... what? People forget about it that's what. Because not having electric light in the evening is a bitch. No one is going to walk away from Earth Hour and think, oh I should live without electric lights every night because it is SO awesome!
I would much rather do like a everyone take public transit/carpool to work day, or something like that. Still symbolic, but I think that if people take public transit or carpool to work one day, they might actually think, hey this wasn't bad and keep up with it.
Anyway, I did NOT participate in Earth Hour. Though the lights in my apartment were off. But I was seeing the stage production of Sweeney Todd and there were a lot of lights in the theatre. ;)
