Saturday in the lab

I went to work today and got a ton of stuff done. Before gas got so expensive, when I went to the lab on weekends, I used to vacillate between thinking "it's Saturday, I can take lots of breaks" and "I'm spending my Saturday here, I better have something to show for it when I leave". Now when I drive the 35 miles each way to go the lab on weekends, I think, "I better get a shit ton of work done since I'm spending so much money to get here."

Almost no one else in my lab works on weekends. It's nice to be alone there on occasion. I can listen to whatever music I want without offending anyone. Plus I can sing along! And dance a little! I can use all the space and equipment I want without getting in anyone else's way. I can fart. And bonus: I can get away with not wearing my safety glasses when I'm doing stuff that's really, really low risk (but dont' tell anyone).

The only bad thing today was that I got this really weird pain in my foot, like a cramp or pulled muscle or something. It feels like there's a nail being driven into the arch just next to the heel. By the end of the day I couldn't put weight on my heel -- I had to walk on my tip-toes on that foot. I put one of those rice filled heat packs on it when I got home but it still hurts. I'm hoping that a good night's sleep will take care of it.

I'm glad you can fart in the lab when no one is around! That one gave me a laugh. If I had to drive that far, you'd better believe that I'd be at least 90% productive. I've only gone in on a weekend once since I've moved here because it's 1:15 of driving round trip (even on a weekend). Even during the week, I hate fooling around because I want to get in and get out... it often takes an hour to get home. :o(

Uh oh, sounds like you might have plantar fasciitis. Google it to read about it, but for starters be sure you're wearing shoes with good arch support.

I got plantar fasciitis when I was a freshman in high school and I have worn orthodics and well-supported shoes ever since. I can't walk around barefoot or wear slippers for long periods of time.

I don't go in on weekends unless there are experiments to be done, which means not very often these days. When I did, I would always bop around with my headphones on. Sounds like a great day! though! Hope your foot fees better.

Karina, what!? That sucks. I don't want that! And I'm sorry you have it.

candid, it takes me a minimum of 45 minutes to get there, but usually much longer. But I LOVE where I live and I hate where my work is, plus EGM can take public to his work from where we live Carpooling makes it so much better.

DF, I don't usually go on weekends either unless I have something I really want to get done. In this case, I want this project done before I go on vacation very, very badly.

Even now, I love to be in the lab by myself and get work done, for me, in the really early mornings when husband has take kids to school, students are not in yet, adn meeting have not started. It's a good habit to develop, but remember, you'll never be on your deathbed saying "I should have spent more time in the lab." Make sure you let that foot mend and make time for yourself outside the lab. Have a greast week!

Ah! Putting loud music that you don't really want other people to know about, that's great! I also like working in music.

Hope your foot gets better.

I love alone time in the lab/office. I always get in at least a half hour before everyone else. I cherish that time.

I hate the thought of going to work on weekends and always spend all Saturday/Sunday morning putting it off. But then once I actually get there, I'm perfectly happy to be working. It helps that I'm always extra productive on the weekends because there are fewer distractions! My commute is about 30 minutes each way, so if I do go, I like to stay for a while to make it worth the drive.

Debbie Downer here ;) I have similar feet problems, too, and had to go to a podiatrist (I'm only 28 sheesh!). It will not go away unless you address it.I will never be able to walk barefoot again.

Buy some good shoes. Dansko, Naot, Sanita are just a few of the brands I can now only wear.

I almost always wear a pair of Dansko Professionals. The day I got the pain I was wearing some Merrells, which I have been wearing pretty frequently this summer. But they're pretty supportive. The pain is pretty much gone now. Let's hope it doesn't return.
