Travel anxiety and procrastination

I'm going on a trip tomorrow. I have to attend a workshop for my fellowship program during which I will give a 30-45 min talk (nice that they were so clear with the time expectations, eh?). The talk isn't finished yet, but it shouldn't take me too long to polish it off. Too bad I'm blogging instead.

I always get a lot of anxiety before I travel, especially when it's for work. I get nervous about making my flight, how I'm going to get to the airport, how I'm going to find the hotel, etc. I mentally list what I'm going to wear so I don't end up short a shirt or something. I also worry about my talk/poster. I'll have visions of forgetting the poster tube or bringing the wrong memory stick. I'm usually fine with actually giving the presentation, but I get anxious about everything up until the session starts.

I best get back to work on the talk so I can go to bed early tonight and enjoy the afternoon in conference city tomorrow with some of the fellows with whom I have become friends at past workshops. Also, I'm not sure if I'll be blogging while I'm away, but with the infrequency of my posts lately, that should be nothing new.

Practice the talk a couple more times, then get some well-earned sleep. Hey - tomorrow will take care of itself (except, maybe, for getting packed).

Have a good time!

Good luck!! Don't forget to pack pajamas! (I always forget those.)

I totally empathize- I always get worked up before I travel, more so for work than for other things. On a personal trip, if I forget my nice shoes, the only consequence is that I look a little funny in church. On a conference trip, the more experienced professionals will give me the evil eye and my reputation (did I have one?) will suffer.

Have a good time at your conference.

I get anxious about these things too when I'm traveling for work. I think the stress of having to give a talk, present a poster, and/or impress bigwigs in my field amplifies what is normally low-level anxiety about the logistics of travel.

Hope you don't worry too much and get to enjoy your time in conference city. Good luck with your talk!

I'm the type who will have copies of the talk on a laptop, CD, memory stick, and emailed to at least 2 of my accounts. Just in case...

Enjoy!

(like ardous, I tend to forget my pajamas... could be worse, I guess!)

Well, I managed to get to the airport plenty early only to wait out a thunderstorm for 2 hours on the tarmac, give a respectable if not great talk without emailing anyone from home to send me forgotten files, and have all the necessary clothes and accessories. So I guess it was a success.
