Who are you?

Drugmonkey has a post up that he wants to make all memey, so I will run with it. Most people who read blogs don't leave comments, so even with a dynamic medium like a blog, it's hard to know your audience. So the question for readers, originally from the blog Not Exactly Rocket Science, is

Tell me about you. Who are you? Do you have a background in science? If so, what draws you here as opposed to meatier, more academic fare? And if not, what brought you here and why have you stayed? Let loose with those comments.

So, Readers, please delurk if you care to.

I am not a scientist but I like to visit scientists anyway because I think a lot of the things you women scientists deal with (work-life balance, etc) are universal issues.

Also because most of the scientists I've met online (like you) seem to be really cool, smart people. And I love cool, smart people!

But I can't in any way be classified as a lurker. I have waaaaaay too much of a big mouth.

Well, you already know who I am...even in real life! So I'll just say "present" for the roll-call. :-)

I'm a science grad student and I read your blog and others like it because I'm interested in the culture of science, and I'm invested in it being a place I want to spend my career as a scientist. I think the exchange of ideas and dialogue that happens on these sciencey blogs are important for us to collectively develop a vision for the change we want to see and be in academia, industry, and beyond.

Hardly a lurker, but then, you knew that. I came because you left a comment on my blog, and stay because you and your thoughts interest me. So I second what Arduous said:

I'm not a blogger, but I'm a daily reader and occasional commenter round these parts...
I'm a final year PhD student in the molecular biological sciences... I read your blog and others like it from talented women scientists to

1. Feel a little less alone in my thoughts and issues

2. Gain inspiration

3. For the great writing and interesting, cool, smart people whose lives I get a little peak into...

Also not a lurker, but I stick around because we are at similar stages of our careers in closely-related sub-fields. Plus that whole cool/smart thing!

1. Well, you kind of know who I am, so I won't elaborate. :)

2. Background in science? HA! Not quite.

3. Because I enjoy your blog... I actually only read a few meaty, academic blogs now (and they're all composition-oriented). I like blogs that are more personal.

4. What brought me here? Hmmm... I think you left a comment on my blog first, which lead me over here.

Hi - I'm a new reader, introduced to your blog by a coworker. We work for Research!America, an advocacy alliance that works to make "research to improve health a higher national priority" ... basically we advocate for more federal funds for research at NIH, CDC, AHRQ, NSF, etc. I am the main poster to the R!A blog, and I'm personally a communications/web person interested in social media as well as promoting science and research as part of my job.

I think I found you initially because you commented on another blog and I stayed because of your post resonate with me. Then I found out we lived near each other and it was great to have a friend to meet for lunch every so often!

I found your blog via another one (can't remeber which). I have a background in science and will hopefully continue in science. I started reading because I was looking for a community beyond my own grad department, where we know each others' ups and downs but also know the competitions and department drama.

So I like your blog and can relate to it. Can´t quite remember how I came across it though.
And I had been thinking about sending you a short message, it feels so strange reading about people´s lifes anonymously ...
