Kittehs!

We are cat sitting for a friend for the next month. Having been debating getting our own cats for many months, I'm excited to have an opportunity to test drive these ones to learn more about my suspected allergies and low tolerance for hair on the furniture.

Our friend dropped them off on Friday night. They didn't leave the room where he released them, the office (except when he had them in the bathroom to clean off the poo and pee they made and then wallowed in while in the carrier), mostly hiding under the futon. Our friend spent the night on Friday, so they were with him on the futon that night. All day Saturday, they continued to hide in the office. They eventually started to venture out into the rest of our apartment, but if they saw me they'd dart back to safety under the futon.

Until last night.

They decided to come out in the middle of the night. I mandated that they should not be allowed in our bedroom. I figure any allergy problems I might have will only be worse if they sleep on my face and I really don't want all my clean clothes covered in cat hair. But, they were scratching at the door and meowing like crazy. Eventually, EGM went out to sleep on the futon with them (isn't he a peach?). They still meowed like crazy, so he gave up and came back to bed with the door open. They came in and out, roving all around but sill making lots of noise. At one point they even pulled down the curtain (on a tension rod, so not that difficult). So we locked them out again. I'm not sure if they were looking for our friend or were freaked out by bad weather outside. The noise eventually stopped, but it kept us up for much of the night. Today they are resting quietly under the futon. In summary, they keep us up all night and are no fun during the day. Little shits. Still, I'm hoping they'll come around because they are awfully cute.

So I ask: who on earth had the brilliant idea of domesticating a nocturnal animal?

I promise that academic/science posting will resume soon.

Domesticating any animal for indoor purposes is silly if you ask me. Let them be outdoors. But then I'm pretty much anti-pet, anti-hair on clothes/couch and any other anti you can think of. And I'm not even in a particularly bad mood today :-)

My cat didn't always but has been keeping my family up at night recently. Now that I'm staying at my mom's I get a piece of this. She will meow a few times during the night until she wakes someone up and they let her outside. Then of course she will do the same thing until someone lets her back inside.
But yes, they are cute enough to be worth it.

Aww...no pictures of cute kitties? You can let your readers vote on whether they're cute enough to be worth it! :-)

HGG, I pretty much agree. EGM would really like cats and he has worn me down to the point of at least considering them. But that's the ONLY animal I would EVER consider.

Jennie, that sucks. At least these cats don't go back and forth to the outside.

Mad Hatter, if they would ever come out from under the couch maybe I could take a photo to post!

We are lucky enough to have cats that like to sleep through the night. They sleep on my head of course though!
Hopefully those cats will calm down soon. Good luck!

Our cats do pretty well at night, as long as we confiscate their golf balls to avoid the rolling on wooden floors noise that freaks me out in the dark.

Our cat sitting test drive (to help persuade Mr E Man) resulted in us adopting two kitties, so be careful!

Actually, this experience is turning me off! I expected to be ready to run to the shelter and get a couple of kittens, but now I'm not so sure. They make the place seem kind of dirty.

They have calmed down a lot at night now and are mostly out of hiding during the day. I still won't let them in the bedroom though. Last night they were meowing at the door and EGM called me "an ice-cold bitch" for not letting them in. He was joking, of course!

Check out these geologically trained cats.

Cats can be trained to be outdoor pets (if they don't train you otherwise), they are cleaner than dogs in some ways (very fastidious about cleaning themselves), but both cats and dogs can occasionally bring home things you don't want dragged into the living room!
