It's not just the wardrobe

On Sunday I wrote how the meetings I attend cover a gradient of formalness in terms of fashion. It seems to be inversely related to the proportion of female attendees. The least fancy meeting has the most women (and children) and so on. Interesting...

I wonder if men prefer suits partly because it makes everything so much easier for them. A suit is a no-brainer. It means not thinking at all or worrying about what are you going to wear.

I read a fascinating article that argued that the fashion industry freaked out when women started only wearing suits, because it would have meant a huge loss in revenue, so they designed many other work choices for women, and pushed for business casual in offices so that women would continue to spend money on clothes.

Frankly, I'm thrilled not to wear a suit every day, but I do end up spending a lot of time wondering what to wear to work every day, and I've probably ended up spending more money on my many business casual outfits than a few suits would have cost. But I'd still rather go to work wearing comfortable clothes.

Wow, that's completely opposite from the meetings I attend. It seems the women are always much more formally dressed than guys.

Of course, there are far, far fewer women at the meetings I go to (the last was <7% female!) so perhaps I have a sampling problem!

Myself, I always prefer to err on the side of overdressed because I look VERY young....and I think that wearing suits, etc help me to be taken more seriously! :)

Arduou: I'm glad I don't ever have to wear a suit because I think they are really uncomfortable. My mom made me buy one when I graduated college and I wore it exactly once -- to a job fair right before I graduated. And that's a really interesting story about the business casual thing. It's amazing how manipulative marketing people are!

Jennie: Thanks! It was soo nice of you to stay since I'm assuming your main interest was the talk two before mine which was a great talk. I'm really sorry I missed yours. I got help up at posters during that time and couldn't make it. I hope it went well.

Unbalanced: I also look much younger than I am, but I just dare someone at a meeting to even hint that I look too young for what I'm doing. They'd think carefully before they talked to me the next time. :)
